“Honor Thy Children” Program Featuring Al and Jane Nakatani

<!--:en-->“Honor Thy Children” Program Featuring Al and Jane Nakatani<!--:-->

API Equality-LA is also proud to co-sponsor this event.

The epidemic of teen suicides in the past year points out the need to respect all of our differences. The loss of promising young children to suicide from bullying and the life-long damages resulting from frequent beatings and bashings should not be tolerated in our communities. The “Honor Thy Children” program reveals how the process of human and self-denigration diminishes and destroys children and young people. It is a story that teaches us to truly honor and love ALL children. Al and Jane Nakatani, whose tragic family story is documented in their book “Honor Thy Children,” will present a program which includes a film describing their family’s gripping story. Two of their children died of AIDS, and one was murdered. Self-denigration as applied to the problems of bullying and suicide will be addressed.

Crossroads: The Intersection of LGBT and API Civil Rights

On September 17, community leaders and activists are invited to join API Equality-LA for an event called, “Crossroads: The Intersection of API and LGBT Civil Rights.” After a successful event in 2009, we are re-convening to continue exploring important issues that impact our communities. We hope to bring a diverse audience of activists and community leaders together to highlight our points of intersection so that we can better create a unified social justice movement. The three topics we will explore are: the FAIR Education Act, immigration reform, and bullying in schools. At the event, you will focus on one of these areas in a breakout session.

Speakers include:

Assemblymember Warren Furutani, 55th Assembly District
Marsha Aizumi, Opportunities for Learning Public Charter School and mother of a transgender activist
Stephen Jimenez, Project 10, Los Angeles Unified School District
Daniel Solis, Southern California Program Manager, The Gay-Straight Alliance Network
Claudia Chen, Intern, the Gay-Straight Alliance Network
Connie Choi, Immigration Attorney, Asian Pacific American Legal Center
Our exciting and interactive program will give attendees a chance learn about current work in these areas, network with like-minded individuals, and lay the groundwork for future collaborations and collective action. Thanks so much for your support and we hope to see you there!

Tuesday, September 13, 2011 | 6:45 Dinner | 7:00 PM Meeting

On September 6, 2011, the California Supreme Court heard arguments on whether or not anti-gay forces have the right to defend Proposition 8 in court.  This month, Peter Renn, Staff Attorney from Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender people and people in HIV, will speak about the recent hearing and other issues related to the Prop 8 challenges.  Peter will also discuss Obama’s new policies on immigration and their impact on the LGBT community and bi-national couples.  Come learn about important new LGBT litigation as well as ask questions of someone as knowledgeable and experienced as Peter.

As always, we will hear exciting reports from the many events API Equality-LA engaged in this past month as well as the groundbreaking activities of our standing and ad hoc committees.  We will also give an update on efforts around protecting the FAIR Education Act.
