“Stand Up for Justice” to Screen at Self Help Graphics

Self Help Graphics, a Chicano arts organization along with Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) and Visual Communications will be screening the film, “Stand Up for Justice” at Self Help Graphics on August 18th at 7:30.  This 30-minute film is based on the true story of a 16-year-old, Mexican-Irish American high school student from Belmont High School who joined his Japanese American friends at Manzanar during World War II.  Ralph Lazo voluntarily lived at Manzanar as the only non-Japanese (non-spouse), was drafted from the camp, and in later years continued to support his Japanese American friends in the fight for redress and reparations.

The film premiered in 2004 and has been shown at film festivals in Hawaii, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego and won the Special Jury Award at the WorldFest in Houston, Texas.  It has been part of the Day of Remembrance programs on difference college campuses and in various communities. Los Angeles Times film critic Kevin Thomas commented, “Stand Up for Justice is a heart-wrenching 30-minute drama that deserves to become a feature-length film.”

After the film, members of the community will answer questions and share plans for future screenings and teacher workshops. Attendees may also purchase the DVD.  The audience is invited to stay for refreshments. Contact NCRR or Self Help Graphics for more information.

When: Wednesday, August 18th at 7:30PM

Where: 1300 East 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA

General Coalition Meeting

Guest Speaker: Roland Palencia, newly-appointed Executive Director of Equality California.

Last month, trailblazing LGBT activist Roland Palencia took the helm of Equality California, the largest LGBT civil rights organization in the state. He possesses more than two decades of organizing experience and expertise with LGBT and healthcare issues and has long worked to provide resources to underserved communities, including LGBT communities, undocumented immigrants and the uninsured. Previously, Roland held leadership positions with the California Endowment, Clinica Monsenor Oscar A. Romero and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. He was a co-founder of pioneering community-based organization, Gay and Lesbian Latinos Unidos (GLLU), the first major Latino LGBT advocacy group, which later led to the establishment of Bienestar Human Services. Roland is currently an Advisory Board Member of HONOR PAC, an LGBT Latino Political Action Committee that supported and led efforts in East Los Angeles to fight Proposition 8.

Roland will discuss current efforts by homophobic forces to place an anti-gay initiative on the ballot in 2012 that would overturn the FAIR Education Act, legislation that mandates that LGBT history be taught in California schools.  Come meet the new Executive Director of Equality California and learn how to support this groundbreaking pro-LGBT legislation!

As always, we will hear exciting reports from the many events API Equality-LA engaged in this past month as well as the buzzing activities of our standing and ad hoc committees.

As we will be serving dinner, PLEASE RSVP NOW.

Support TV Series featuring people of color and LGBT Youth

Jorge Ortiz is putting together a pilot for his new groundbreaking, scripted TV show that will be an important step forward not only for the LGBT community as a whole, but for the LGBT youth community in particular. The show features Latin characters in leading roles, as well as a series regular on my show who is an 18 year old Korean kid. He is the best friend of the lead character. Ortiz’s series goes beyond mere entertainment to include an awareness outreach campaign aimed at LGBT youth by providing them with positive role models and organization information after every episode. Starting with the pilot episode, and screening it at high schools and colleges through their LGBT organizations, websites will be posted at the end of the episode so that LGBT youth can find help and answers.

Ortiz is currently in the process of shooting a 22 page pilot and has launched an Indiegogo campaign to help raise funds to cover certain production costs. Please support his groundbreaking endeavors in any way possible.
