Join us in celebrating the recent passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act! The act adds sexual orientation, gender and disability as protected classes under the federal hate crime statute. API Equality-LA Co-chair Marshall Wong will also share the most recent statistics on hate crime in Los Angeles County with a special emphasis on homophobic, anti-trans, and anti-Asian crimes. Also, meet API Equality-LA’s new community organizer Brian Nguyen who started on the job in November!

The New Year brings us new hope. We’re proud to begin 2010 by presenting Alan Chan as our January Activist of the Month!
What is one sound that characterizes you?
This is a weird question since sounds aren’t very descriptive but I’d say a futuristic Jetson’s sound. I love gadgets.http://www.findsounds.com/types.html
Where are you right now?
I’m at my CIS 461: Network Security class at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
What is one thing about you that surprises people?
I’ve attended every Vote for Equality canvass since they started a month after Prop 8 passed, talking to registered voters across LA about marriage equality.
What committee are you involved with in API Equality?
I am involved with the media/website committee.
How did you get involved?
A socially-conscious friend made me sign up for the mailing list at Christopher Street West Pride Festival.
Why is it important to continue this fight for marriage equality?
Civil rights applies to everyone and not just the privileged.
